Hair Loss Products and Treatments

So you're getting older, your hair is getting thinner and your hairline is receding or your bald spot is slowly expanding. What action can you take?

The FDA has allowed two products to come to the market — Rogaine and Propecia. Rogaine is a temporary treatment that you rub on to your scalp. The active ingredient in Rogaine — minoxidil — enlarges your hair follicles and delays the individual hairs from falling out. It's a temporary solution, and if it works, it only works for as long as you continue to use it.

Propecia is a pill containing finasteride. Propecia works by cutting down your production of DHT. DHT is a hormone that shrinks your hair follicles, causing your precious hairs to tumble out. Propecia is effective in maintaining the size of your follicles and sometimes even enlarging them. But it is a pill, so it does have some side effects and consequences. Mainly, it is not for men actively trying to get their mate pregnant. There is also a small chance of impotency. You can find these products at your local drugstore or, if you want to save a dollar or two, at an online shop like OnlyHairLoss.

If you have male pattern baldness, you can consider a toupee. The hairpieces made today look very natural and you can walk out of the office looking (from the back anyway) like a new man.

There are two problems with a toupee. First, you will basically have a little cap glued to the top of your skull. It may irritate you, it may itch, it may annoy you that you can't take it off. Second, they don't last very long before they need to be replaced, restyled or reglued. You will be visiting the office that fitted you constantly — once a month, twice a month or even more. Toupees are high maintenance items.

What is the best hair loss treatment? The most effective option we have today is hair transplant surgery. These medical hair implant procedures are not cheap and they're not any fun to go through, but they do work.

Your procedure involves spending a day at your doctor's office. Your doctor will harvest a strip of your scalp from the bottom-back side of your head (the hair that grows there usually grows there forever) and then those individual hairs are implanted into your scalp where you want hair to grow in the future. It's uncomfortable but not painful. It takes about a week to fully recover and the end result a few months down the road usually looks good and natural.

Hair transplants are the most expensive option, but they are also just a one-time payment. The other options, including a toupee, require monthly maintenance expenses that can really add up through the years.

Many women find that they lose a lot of hair after having a baby. What is the deal with hair loss after pregnancy anyway? Is it normal. Why do you lose more hair after pregnancy than you did before?
If you're like a lot of Americans, besides hair loss, your other big fight may be with your weight. Finding the best weight loss diet plan and exercise program for your situation is an important first step.
